Every 7th Lunar Month, the gates of hell open and hungry ghosts are free to wander the mortal realm, looking for food and entertainment - or do they?
What exactly happens during the 7th Lunar Month? Why do people burn joss paper in the streets and by the pavements? What is the meaning of the prayers and rituals done in public and in temples? Is there any truth to the taboos associated with the 7th Lunar Month? How much is based on religion and scripture, and how much is just superstition and hearsay? Journeys Pte Ltd, the management of Haw Par Villa, is organising a panel discussion with experts in Buddhism and Taoism, to shed light on an oft-misunderstood practice - the observation of the 7th Lunar Month in Singapore. The moderated session will clear misconceptions and correct perspectives about a very public festival which has a significant impact on Singapore’s religious landscape. Members of the public will also get the chance to pose questions to the panellists |
