During the 7th Lunar Month, many believe that the gates of Hell are thrown open. It is a time for deities, humans, and spirits from the netherworld to mingle. Amidst the smoke and makeshift altars, what is the true origin and meaning of 7th Lunar Month traditions?
Discover how this festival took shape in China, then evolved from the yesteryears of slow-paced kampong life to the concrete jungle of post-independence Singapore. Talk & Dialogue Session During this year's 7th Lunar Month, Journeys Pte Ltd, the management of Haw Par Villa, is inviting Esmond Soh, a lecturer from the History Department at Nanyang Technological University, and Tay Yu Xuan, a final-year master's student at the National University of Singapore to shed light on the evolution of 7th Lunar Month commemorations in Singapore. The moderated dialogue session will explore the origins and trace the history behind a very public festival which has a significant impact on Singapore’s religious landscape. Members of the public will also get the chance to pose their burning questions to the panellists. |
